The Team, Now and Then

An industry leader, the Atlanta office of North American Properties (NAP) led the turnaround of Atlantic Station, the ground up development of Avalon, and the reimagination of Colony Square.

The company’s current portfolio includes Avenue East Cobb in Marietta, Georgia; Birkdale Village in Huntersville, North Carolina; Newport on the Levee in Newport, Kentucky; and Riverton in Sayreville, New Jersey. NAP’s Experience Makers® strive to create meaningful value and extraordinary experiences.

To bring its vision for Colony Square to life, NAP enlisted the New York City office of Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners in collaboration with Atlanta-based Lord Aeck Sargent.

Beyer Blinder Belle has helped to revitalize and reposition numerous iconic buildings and sites, including Grand Central Terminal, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Center, and the World Trade Center. The firm’s expertise in architecture and urban design bolstered the transformation of Atlanta’s original mixed-use project into a modern, vibrant destination.

Lord Aeck Sargent collaborated with Beyer Blinder Belle, bringing local expertise and additional historical perspective to the project.

The team behind Colony Square, the Southeast’s first mixed-use development, was transformative from its initial conception.

Rising star Jim Cushman, a young developer that had helped build the Lenox Towers office building and the Paces Place development in Atlanta’s new Buckhead suburb, had amicably separated from his mentor Ward Wight in order to build a visionary “micropolis” in Midtown Atlanta. Cushman engaged architect Henri Jova and landscape architect Paul Friedberg, both rising stars themselves, to achieve his vision. Jova ultimately joined forces with John Busby and Stanley Daniels to create Jova-Daniels-Busby, and the Colony Square project became their first commission. The basic site plan for Colony Square is attributed to Friedberg, who served as a consultant to Jova-Daniels-Busby for the project.
